Ajax's history began in 1941 during World War II, when Defence Industries Limited (DIL), North America's largest defense industry, was established to supply the Allies. The area quickly grew as thousands of workers and their families settled there, forming a new community. The town was named "Ajax" in honor of one of the three ships that, in 1939, engaged and routed the German battleship Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate. Today, Ajax's unique history is celebrated through numerous historic sites and landmarks. Streets are named after officers and crew from the Ajax, Exeter, and Achilles ships, with trees planted to honor veterans and their families during visits.
